The St Leonards Academy is committed to delivering careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) in line with the eight Gatsby benchmarks of good career guidance and the Career Development Institute Framework for Careers, Employability and Enterprise Education. Summary of Careers Programme
Students have a module of careers education lessons as part of their PHSE curriculum. These lessons are designed to increase self-awareness, look at skills and qualities, raise awareness of the world of work, how to manage change and ultimately state ambitions that align with their interest areas.
We are this year providing a careers event for them with our colleagues at Futures First working with alumni to provide information on a range of jobs and careers through a carousel format.
Students have a module of careers education lessons as part of their PHSE curriculum. These lessons look at:
• Awareness and knowledge of careers development
• Investigation into work and working life
• Identify and value equality, diversity and inclusion and workplace stereotyping
• Identify choices and opportunities at a decision point (option choices)
• Know how to make plans and decisions carefully
• Know how to prepare and present yourself well
In preparation for their options choices all year 8 students are given guidance interviews in small groups by a trained and independent careers advisor from our partners at My Future Starts Here.
There is a Year 8 options evening where students and parents have the opportunity to find out about the exam subjects on offer. GCSE subjects are now studied over a three year period. Careers advice is available at this event and local colleges also attend.
Students have a module of careers education lessons as part of their PHSE curriculum. Lessons content includes:
• Examples of different business and organisational structures
• Investigating jobs and local labour market information
• Learning about safe practices and employment laws
• Developing personal and financial capability
Year 9 students will also be given the chance to attend Compact Plus University visits and they will have creative café events organised for them with local employers. Students in year 9 also have the opportunity to attend the STEM Big Bang event at the Ardingly showground.
Students have a module of careers education as part of their PSHE curriculum. Lessons focus on:
• Preparing for employability
• Making the most of careers education, information and advice
• Identifying choices and opportunities
• Handling applications and selection
• Interpreting local labour market information
Year 10 students also have a ‘Progression Morning’ whereby they attend a carousel of workshops by external providers and a careers fair where they have the opportunity to speak to approximately 10 – 12 local employers and post 16 education providers.
For the first time a selection of Year 10 students will be undertaking a pilot project of a week’s work experience.
All students in Year 10 attend two local post 16 college taster days in order to help with their choices in Year 11 and some students have the opportunity to attend University campus visits through the Compact Plus scheme.
Students continue their careers programme through tutor time activities. They focus on support networks and accessing advice and guidance, continuing to research and identify their choices and opportunities.
All students in year 11 are given an individual careers guidance meeting with a level 6 trained impartial careers guidance advisor. Each student is given an individual action plan to support them as a direct result of their meeting. They are also given help and support with their college applications through UCAS Progress during tutor time and after school sessions.
Local post 16 providers are invited to give assemblies during terms 1 and 2 and leave prospectuses for the students.
Parents and students are invited to an information evening in term 1, local colleges and post 16 providers along with qualified independent careers advisers also attend this evening to answer questions and queries.
The St Leonards Academy Alumni
We are working with Future First to develop an alumni of ex-students to work with the school in supporting current students in a variety of different ways. If you are an ex-student of The St Leonards Academy or predecessor schools please sign up so we can keep you up to date as this project develops.

Regular career updates are published in the school newsletter
There is information regarding careers on the school website and this is being added to and developed all the time.
Evaluation of Provision
We regularly evaluate careers provision and are developing ways to include parents and students more in this evaluation.
